Ultimately the Internet of Things (IoT) for logistics and supply chain management is evolving as the industry has adopted the needed devices. However the underlying technology is very fragmented. The nature of business also brings so much of disconnects that requires business process integration. Business and IT leaders of the organizations have M2M (Machine to Machine) integrations in their roadmap.

Key factors considered:

– Device based vehicle monitoring, field services and warehouse management has matured in North America.

– Cost of data/internet on devices is more affordable

– Wider and more reliable coverage for data/internet by wireless carriers

– Touch interface based devices has improved acceptance by end users (pick up, delivery, operations personnel etc.)

– Cloud based solutions have received more acceptance (security, cost, economy, usability) by the business and IT

– Integration infrastructure using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services (JSON and REST)

Innovation and demands around energy industry, policies around energy independence, go-green initiatives, global economy and similar drives will put more and more demands.

In addition, demand from Big Data initiatives driven by the need to bring predictability to business operations requires elements that constitute to the vital KPI (Key Performance Indicators). The measurable outcome of these initiatives include increased new business opportunities and reduced downtime due to proactive measures to name a few.
